Pioneers Split, Win Streak Halted at 8

The Pioneers won Game 1, but lost Game 2 in extra innings at Avila on Saturday. Avila score 2 unearned runs to take a 2-0 lead while MNU was held scoreless into the sixth. Clayton Brandt led off the inning with a walk and Trent Sullivan reached on a bunt hit. Jordan Eckley followed with a double to cut the deficit in half, and a Joe Smith bases-loaded walk tied the score. MNU broke it open in the seventh when Colin Starr led off with a double and Brandt followed with bunt hit. Sullivan worked a successful squeeze bunt for the lead, and the Pioneers scored 5 more times to take an 8-2 lead. Santiago Romero allowed just 4 hits in 6 innings for the victory, and Brandt (1-3, 2 R, BB, SB), Sullivan (1-3, R, RBI, Sac), Eckley (2-3, R, 2B, RBI, BB), Carlos Vargas (1-2, R, 2 BB), Smith (2-3, R, 2 RBI, BB), and Ricco Moreno (1-3, 2 RBI) led the offense.

In Game 2, neither offense could get much going but Avila took a 1-0 lead on a squeeze bunt in the 2nd, and MNU was held scoreless until the 6th once again. Jordan Eckley doubled home Clayton Brandt to tie the game, and the score remained 1-1 into the 8th inning. Avila led off the bottom of the 8th with a single and bunted him to second. The next batter singled home the winning run, and Avila salvaged a split. Caleb Swartz pitched into the 6th and struck out 7 in the no-decision, and Brandt (2-3, R, Sac) and Eckley (2-3, 2B, RBI, BB) had 2 hits apiece.

MNU is 19-10 (12-4 HAAC). The next double header is a non-conference affair at Ottawa (12-22) on Tuesday at 1:00.
