OZARK, Mo. – Photos | MNU came out swinging Saturday evening and built an early lead, but a devastating 4th inning proved too much to overcome as the Pioneers fell 10-8 to William Woods in Heart Conference Tournament action.
MNU wasted no time setting the tone offensively. In the opening frame, Noah Castillo launched a solo home run to left, and just moments later Christian Ramos crushed a 2-run shot to left-center, giving the Pioneers a quick 3-0 advantage.
William Woods answered with 2 runs in the bottom half of the 1st and continued to apply pressure, eventually tying the game at 4Â in the 3rd inning after a 2-run homer.
The Pioneers briefly regained control in the 4th. After Jeremy Morales reached and advanced, Riggs Harper drove in a run with a groundout to put MNU back in front at 5-4.
But the game turned dramatically in the bottom of the inning. William Woods capitalized on defensive miscues and timely hitting, erupting for 6 runs on 5 hits. The surge flipped a 1-run deficit into a 10-5 advantage and ultimately proved to be the difference.
MNU refused to go away. The Pioneers chipped away at the deficit with a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Jeremy Morales, then added another in the 6th on a sacrifice fly by Harper. Morales delivered again in the 7th with an RBI single to cut the margin to 10-8.
Despite the late push, MNU couldn't complete the comeback. William Woods' bullpen shut down the final 2 innings, stranding a baserunner in the 8th and retiring the side in order in the 9th to secure the win.
Turning Point
William Woods' 6-run fourth inning flipped the game.
