OZARK, Mo. – Photos | MNU delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Friday evening, knocking off top-seeded and #7-ranked Missouri Baptist 8-6 in Heart Conference Tournament action. Powered by a huge 3rd inning and a 5-RBI day from Kaden Owens, the Pioneers built an early cushion and held off multiple Spartan pushes to secure the upset victory.
MNU struck first in the opening inning, capitalizing on an early defensive miscue. Riggs Harper reached on an error, setting the stage for Kaden Owens, who launched a 2-run homer to right-center to give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead.
Missouri Baptist answered with a run in the second, but MNU delivered the decisive blow in the 3rd. The Pioneers erupted for 4 runs on 6 hits in the frame as Owens came through again with a 2-run double, while Christian Ramos and Ryan Martinez each added RBI singles as the lead expanded to 6-1.
The Spartans responded in the 4th inning with a 3-run home run from Carlos Hidalgo, trimming the margin to 6-4 and briefly shifting momentum. But MNU answered immediately, as Ronnie Rowley crushed a solo homer to right-center in the bottom half to restore a three-run cushion at 7-4.
Missouri Baptist continued to chip away, taking advantage of miscues to score in the 7th and adding another run in the 8th to pull within 1 at 7-6. Jaymal Bonilla provided a critical bridge out of the middle innings, limiting damage and keeping MNU in front. Giancarlo Cortez handled the late-game pressure, working the final 2.1 innings to earn the save.
MNU added a crucial insurance run in the 8th inning. With the bases loaded, Owens drew a walk to force in a run, extending the lead to 8-6 and giving the Pioneers just enough breathing room.
Cortez closed the door in the 9th, inducing a game-ending double play to seal the win and send MNU forward in the tournament.
