Pioneers Split HAAC Opener

MNU went to Springfield and split a double header at Evangel on Friday. In Game 1, Evangel score a run in the first, but Trent Sullivan singled home the tying run in the third, and Jordan Jones put the Pioneers up 1 with a single in the fourth. Jordan Eckley's 2-run homer in the fifth gave MNU a 4-1 lead, and a 3-run rally in the sixth extended the advantage. Evangel put up 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth, but starter Trent Hedlund held the Crusaders right there and MNU won 7-3. Hedlund scattered 8 hits for a complete-game victory. And Clayton Brandt (3-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, SB), Trent Sullivan (2-4, RBI, SB), Jordan Eckley (1-4, R, HR, 2 RBI), and Jordan Jones (2-3, R, RBI, 2B) led the offense.

In Game 2, Seth Lieser's 2-run homer gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead, but it was short-lived. Starter Tino Luna's season debut went well for 3 innings, but the fourth was a defensive disaster for MNU. After a leadoff single, the Pioneers committed 3 consecutive errors then hit 2 batters. Five runs scored in the inning, and Evangel rallied for 5 more in the fifth to take a 10-3 lead. The Pioneers scored 4 runs in the final innings, but Evangel held on to win 12-7. Trent Sullivan (1-3, 2 R, BB, SB), Jordan Eckley (3-5, R, 2B), Seth Lieser (2-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, BB), and Carlos Vargas (2-5, 2 RBI) led the offense.

MNU is 7-7 (1-1 HAAC). The next game is a single 9-inning game at home vs. McPherson (5-12) on Tuesday at 1:00.
