Game 1: Trent Hedlund struck out a career-high 7 in MNU's 8-6 victory over #5 Oklahoma City on Friday. The Pioneers got on the board in the first inning when
Jordan Eckley led off with a double and eventually scored on a balk. Oklahoma City took the lead in the 2nd with 2 runs, but MNU answered right back on
Tyler Meeks' 2-run single in the 3rd. The Stars scored 2 more in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead, but the Pioneers again fought back with back-to-back sacrifice flies to retake the lead.
Caleb Swartz relieved Hedlund with 2 outs and 2 on in the 7th and recorded a strikeout to escape the jam, and
Seth Lieser's 2-run double capped a 3-run 8th to give the Pioneers an 8-4 cushion. OKCU got a run closer in the 8th, then scored another and loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 9th. But
Ethan Hargrave closed it out with a called 3rd strike, and MNU took the opener.
Hedlund allowed 5 hits and struck out a career-high 7 in 6+ innings.
Caleb Swartz struck out 2 in over an inning of relief. Hargrave recorded the save while striking out 2 in the 9th. And
Jordan Eckley (1-3, 3 R, 2B, 2 BB),
Seth Lieser (1-3, 2B, 3 RBI, BB, SF),
Tyler Meeks (1-4, 2 RBI, BB), and
Trent Sullivan (1-3, R, 2 BB) led the offense.
Game 2:Â Oklahoma City scored 3 runs in each of the first 2 innings and cruised to an 11-3 victory over MNU on Saturday. The Pioneers scored single runs in the third, sixth, and seventh innings, but the Stars managed 12 hits in the rout.
Trent Sullivan (2-2, R, RBI) had 2 hits for MNU.
Game 3: The Pioneers scored in each of the first 3 innings then exploded for 8 in the fifth in a 13-5 victory over #14 Bellevue on Saturday.
Clayton Brandt got the scoring started with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, and
Colin Starr drove in 2 with a single in the second.
Carlos Vargas and
Trent Sullivan each recorded RBIs in the third, and MNU led 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, the first 5 Pioneers reached base without the benefit of a base hit, and rally followed to bring home 8 runs. The Bruins picked up a run in the seventh, but the Pioneers won 13-5 on just 8 hits.
Carlos Vargas threw 6 innings for the victory. And
Clayton Brandt (1-4, R, HR, RBI, BB), Seth Leiser (1-4, 2 R, 2 RBI),
Jordan Jones (1-2, 2 R, BB),
Trent Sullivan (1-2, R, 2 RBI),
Ricco Moreno (1-3, 2 R, RBI), and
Colin Starr (2-4, 4 RBI) led the offense.
MNU is 2-1. Up next is a 4-game series at Wayland Baptist (6-5) starting on Friday.
