Pioneers Sweep Vikings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Pioneers are strongly positioned in the HAAC Western Division after a double header sweep of Missouri Valley on Tuesday. With the wins MNU is in a virtual tie with Benedictine with 6 games remaining (BC has 8 remaining). In Game 1, Kyle Olson scattered 4 singles and struck out 5 for his 6th victory. But the Pioneer bats were kept silent until the bottom of the fifth. With Kyle Brown on 2nd and 2 outs, Valley dropped a fly ball to give MNU a 1-0 lead. In the sixth, 4 consecutive singles brought home a run, and an RBI groundout brought home another to put the Pioneers up 3-0. Olson closed out his complete game for the victory. And Kyle Brown (2-2, R, RBI, BB, SB) led the offense.

In Game 2, the Pioneer bats were quiet again, but Trent Hedlund silenced the Valley offense with just 2 runs in 9 innings. Trailing 2-0 in the fifth, Colin Starr's RBI triple with 2 outs brought home Brad Law, and a 1st and 3rd double steal tied the game. Both teams mounted mild scoring threats in the ensuing innings, but neither could cross the plate and the game continued into the thirteenth inning. In the bottom of the inning, Clayton Brandt led off with a single and Tyler Meeks poked a grounder into right field to put the first 2 runners on. Kyle Brown's bunt was perfect and resulted in a base hit, and Brad Law's sacrifice fly to right field ended the game and completed the sweep. Blake Robberson picked up the win with 4 innings of scoreless relief. And Brad Law (1-4, R, RBI, BB, SF) and Colin Starr (1-4, 3B, RBI, BB) led the offense.

The Pioneers are 20-16 (13-7 HAAC). The next game is Senior Day: a double header on Saturday at home vs. Graceland (17-21, 8-12) at 1:00.
