Baseball Sweeps Ashford

Game 1 highlights | The Pioneers braved brutal weather conditions to sweep Ashford in MNU's home opening double header on Monday. In Game 1, the Pioneers took advantage of a 2-run error combined with a Kyle Brown triple to put up 4 runs in the first inning. Three more runs came across in the bottom of the 6th to put MNU up 7-1, and a double play in the top of the 7th ended an Ashford rally to give the Pioneers a 7-3 victory.

Blake Robberson had a complete game, induced 4 double plays, and struck out 4 in his first victory of the season. And Clayton Brandt (2-4, R, 3B, SB), Colin Starr (2-4, RBI), Joe Smith (1-3, R, SB, Sac), and Brad Law (3-4, R, 2B, RBI) led the offense.

In Game 2, Caleb Swartz dominated and the Pioneers put up 5 runs to complete the sweep. Ashford never sent more than 4 batters to the plate in any inning, and didn't have a runner in scoring position after the 1st. MNU scored on a wild pitch in the 2nd, and scored again in the 4th on a straight steal of home by Kyle Brown with 2 outs. MNU put up 2 runs in the 5th and anouther in the 6th to account for the 5-0 victory.

Swartz scattered 5 hits and struck out 6 for his first victory. And Clayton Brandt (2-3, R, 2B, SB), Brad Law (2-3, R, 2 2B, RBI), and Dillon Moeller (1-1, R, 2 SB, 2 HBP) led the offense.

The Pioneers are 3-5. The next game is a double header on Friday at home vs. Concordia (NE) at 1:00.
