The Pioneers allowed just 4 runs in 4 games over the weekend, but came away with a split at Baker.
Box and Play by Play Game 1 was a battle of top HAAC lefties as
Tino Luna battled Chris Cummins in the opener. The pitcher's duel was as advertized and neither team scored until the fourth inning when a 2-out RBI single put the Wildcats up 1-0. But the Pioneers answered in the top of the fifth when
Derek Glenn walked, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a
Timothy Barraza groundout. With 2 outs and nobody on in the bottom of the fifth, Baker strung 3 singles together to take a 2-1 lead. The Pioneers threatened with 2 outs in the seventh but couldn't tie the game, and Baker took the first game 2-1.
Box and Play by Play In Game 2,
Kyle Olson was brilliant and the offense came alive for a blowout victory for MNU. The Pioneers opened the scoring in the top of the third when
Dillon Moeller was hit by a pitch in front of 3 straight hits for a 2-0 lead. MNU increased the lead with 4 runs on 3 hits in the fifth, 3 runs on 4 hits in the sixth, and 3 runs on 2 hits in the seventh for a 12-0 victory.
Kyle Olson allowed just 5 hits while striking out 6 for the complete game shutout. And
Derek Glenn (2-3, 4 R, 2 BB, SB),
Timothy Barraza (3-4, 2 R, 2B, 4 RBI), and
Alex Murrieta (3-4, R, 3 RBI, SB) led the offense.
Box and Play by Play Game 3 was another pitcher's duel as Baker's Nathan Wheelock battled MNU's
Justin Huggins. Huggins allowed just 2 hits, but an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth turned out to be the difference in a 1-0 Wildcat victory. The Pioneers managed just 3 hits and only got 1 runner to 3rd base in the tough loss.
Kyle Segraves (1-3) and
Alex Murrieta (2-3) had MNU's hits.
Box and Play by Play In the final game,
Trent Hedlund allowed just 3 hits and 1 unearned run for a complete game 5-1 victory to split the series. Trailing 1-0, the Pioneers rallied for 2 runs on 2 hits and an error to take a 2-1 lead in the third. The Pioneers managed a single run in the fourth and rallied for 2 more in the fifth to give Hedlund more than enough support, and the Pioneers salvaged a split.
Derek Glenn (1-3, R, IBB),
Ben Alison (2-4, R, 2B, RBI, SB),
Alex Murrieta (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), and
Dillon Moeller (1-2, R, BB) led the offense.
The Pioneers are 29-12 (11-7 HAAC). The next game is a non conference double header on Tuesday at William Woods (26-17) at 1:00.
