Game 1 Box |
Game 2 Box The Pioneer offense continued to score in bunches as MNU swept a double header from Ottawa on Friday. In Game 1, Ottawa scored 3 in the second inning and put up 1 more in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
Alex Murrieta homered with one out in the fourth inning to get MNU on the board, and
Timothy Barraza knocked in
Derek Glenn in the fifth to cut the deficit to two. The score remained until the bottom of the sixth when the Pioneers mounted a rally. An error and a walk set up a pinch hit opportunity for the injured
Kyle Segraves (hamstring), who promptly ripped a single to left to load the bases with no outs.
Dillon Moeller followed with a double to deep right-center, scoring all three runners and giving the Pioneers a 5-4 lead. After a hit batsman and a sacrifice, Barraza singled home two more to increase the lead. With 2 outs,
Josh Greer doubled home Barraza and the Pioneers led 8-4. The Braves were not done, however, and put up 3 runs with 2 walks, a single, and a double.
Kanon Hoover came in to try to close it out, but a bunt single and a hit batsman loaded the bases with one out. Hoover threw 3 straight balls to the pinch hitter, then fired a close pitch which was called a strike. On the 3-1 pitch, the hitter ripped a hard ground ball to third baseman
Dillon Moeller's left. Moeller snagged the grounder, fired to
Kevin Liddle at second, and Liddle made a perfect turn to complete the 5-4-3 double play and escape the jam.
Tino Luna struck out 10 in 6 innings for his 3rd victory.
Kanon Hoover escaped trouble in the 7th for the save. And
Timothy Barraza (3-3, R, 3 RBI, HBP),
Alex Murrieta (1-3, R, HR, RBI), and
Dillon Moeller (1-3, R, 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense.
In Game 2, the Pioneers took a big lead early and cruised to victory to complete the sweep. Two singles to open the bottom of the first set up
Ben Alison's 2-run double to deep left. After an error,
Alex Murrieta's 3-run blast put the Pioneers up 5-0. Alison continued his big game with a 3-run bomb in the second inning, then extended the lead in the fourth with an RBI triple following a
Colin Starr solo shot to take a 10-0 lead. Ottawa scored a single run in the sixth but that was all they could muster as the Pioneers won their sixth game of the week.
Trent Hedlund retired 11 straight during a dominant stretch and used just 92 pitches and scattered 3 hits for a complete game victory. And
Colin Starr (3-4, R, HR, RBI),
Ben Alison (3-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, HR, 6 RBI), and
Alex Murrieta (1-3, R, HR, 3 RBI) led the offense.
The Pioneer (14-5) offense scored 82 runs in 6 games this week to average 13.7 runs per game. The next game is a single 9-inning game at Doane (12-4) on Tuesday at 4:00.
