Pioneers Sweep Benedictine

Righthanders Keith Staton and Matt Netherton pitched brilliantly in MNU's double header sweep of Benedictine on Friday. In Game 1, the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, then put a big inning together in the third. David Hamlett led off with a single then scored on a 1-out double by Ben Alison. After Alison stole third, Jordan Goliat brough him home with a single to center. Goliat scored on a Jarid Renzelman infield hit, and MNU was up 4-0. MNU took a 5-run lead in the fourth when Donnie MacLeod scored on a Hamlett sacrifice fly, and Keith Staton made it hold up for the 5-1 victory. Staton (4-2) scattered 5 hits and allowed just 1 run for the complete game victory. And David Hamlett (1-2, 2 R, RBI, SF), Ben Alison (1-2, R, 2B, RBI, BB, SB), Jordan Goliat (2-3, R, 2 RBI), and Donnie MacLeod (2-3, R, 3 SB) led the offense.

In Game 2, Matt Netherton carried a no-hitter into the sixth and had only allowed 1 baserunner. He retired 16 consecutive batters while the Pioneers built a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Ben Alison led off with a single and moved to second on an error. A Jordan Goliat bunt hit and a double steal gave the Pioneers the lead. A safety squeeze put the Pioneers up by 2, and an RBI double from Donnie MacLeod capped the third-inning scoring and put MNU up 3-0. The Ravens finally broke up the no-hitter with 2 outs in the sixth and eventually scored to close the gap, but MNU added a run in the bottom of the inning to go back up by 3. Benedictine mounted a comeback in the top of the 7th and trailed 4-3 with runners on 1st and 2nd with one out, but Tino Luna entered the game and struck out the 2 batters he faced for the save. Netherton (4-2) struck out 5 in 6 plus innings for the victory. And Ben Alison (2-2, 2 R, BB, SB), Jordan Goliat (1-2, R, SB, SAC), Jarid Renzelman (1-2, 2 RBI, SAC), and Donnie MacLeod (1-2, 2B, RBI) led the offense.

The Pioneers are 22-10 (14-4 HAAC). The next game is a double header at Benedictine (13-20, 6-11) on Saturday at noon.
