Pioneers Swept by William Jewell

The Pioneers lost their 3rd straight game vs. William Jewell on Senior Day, but still clinched the HAAC West on Saturday. In Game 1, the Pioneers jumped on the Cardinals with 2 runs in the first and another in the third to take a 3-0 lead. But MNU did not score again, and Jewell started their comeback in the fourth. The Cardinals scored 1 in the fourth and then took the lead with 3 in the fifth. MNU was looking to make a comeback in the seventh, but Jewell put the game away in the top of the inning with 8 runs on 5 hits to take a big lead and a 12-3 victory. Ben Alison (3-3, R, 2 2B, RBI) led the Pioneer offense.

In Game 2, William Jewell scored 3 in the top of the first and never gave up the lead. Another run in the fourth and 2 more in the fifth put the Cardinals up 6-1, but MNU made it interesting with 2 runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the sixth, but that was as close as they got and they fell 6-4. Kyle Segraves (1-3, R, RBI, BB), Tim Purdin (1-2, 2 RBI, SF), and Jarid Renzelman (2-3, R, HR, RBI) had big games at the plate.

With Avila's loss at Benedictine, the Pioneers locked up the best record in the HAAC Western Division and will be the 2-seed in the conference tournament next weekend.

The Pioneers are 28-15 (18-9 HAAC). The next game is a single game on Monday at William Jewell (29-18, 14-12) at 4:00.
