The Pioneers survived a late Game 2 scare to salvage a split at Baker on Monday. In Game 1, the Pioneers led 3-1 heading to the fifth inning, but Baker solved MNU pitching and scored 5 unanswered runs to win 6-3. Jordan Goliat (1-4, 2 RBI) and Donnie MacLeod (1-3, R, 2B, RBI) drove in runs for MNU.
In Game 2, the Pioneers built a 5-0 lead for starter Justin Huggins. In the first inning, a Tim Purdin sacrifice fly brought home a run to make it 1-0. In the second inning with 2 outs, Dave Staton was hit by a pitch, and pinch runner Mason Lent scored from first on a Kevin Liddle single. After a walk, Jordan Goliat's RBI single put MNU up 3-0. In the sixth, the Pioneers rallied for 2 more and had a seemingly comfortable 5-run lead in the bottom of the seventh. The first two Baker hitters singled, but a steal attempt was thwarted and the Pioneers got the first out. After a walk and another single, Baker trailed 5-1 and was still threatening. A fielder's choice groundout brought home another run but recorded the second out, but a dropped fly ball brought home 2 more and put the tying run on second. A groundout to short finally ended the inning, and gave MNU a 5-4 victory. Justin Huggins (4-2) struck out 5 in a complete game for his 4th victory of the season. And Kyle Segraves (1-2, 2 R, BB, HBP), Jordan Goliat (1-3, RBI, SAC), Tim Purdin (0-1, RBI, 2 BB, SF), and Kevin Liddle (3-3, 2 R, RBI) led the offense.
The Pioneers are 28-12 (18-6 HAAC). The next double header is Friday the 22nd at William Jewell (27-18, 12-12) at 1:00.
