The Pioneers went to Wichita and picked up a 14-8 victory in a single 9-inning game vs. Friends University on Wednesday.
Tim Purdin got the scoring started with his first homer of the season to lead off the second inning. Friends answered with a run in the third, and MNU rallied for 3 more in the fourth. Purdin led off with a walk and advance on an
AJ Nunley single. After a bunt and a
Donnie MacLeod RBI single,
Josh Greer tripled home 2 more and the Pioneers took a 4-1 lead. Friends got a run in the bottom of the fourth and took the lead with 3 in the fifth, but MNU rallied for a huge seventh inning. With one out, the Pioneers put 5 runs on the board with a 2 walks, 4 singles, a sac fly, 2 wild pitches, and a stolen base to take a 9-5 lead. Friends fought back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning to get within 1, but the Pioneers put the game away in the top of the ninth. Dave Staton led off with a walk, and
Donnie MacLeod followed with his 4th hit of the game. A wild pitch moved the runners into scoring position, and
Jordan Goliat tripled them home.
David Hamlett drove home Goliat with a fielder's choice and ended up on second when the play was over. Hamlett then scored on an error, and
Tim Purdin closed out the scoring with a 2-out single.
Kyle Olson (4-2) got the victory and
Justin Huggins picked up his 5th save. And
Jordan Goliat (2-5, R, 4 RBI, BB),
Tim Purdin (3-5, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB),
AJ Nunley (3-6, 2 R, RBI, SB),
Donnie MacLeod (4-4, 3 R, RBI, SB, SAC), and
Josh Greer (1-3, R, 2 RBI, BB) led the offense.
The Pioneers are 15-9 (7-4 HAAC). The next game is a double header on Friday at Graceland at 1:00.
