Two Complete Games Key Pioneer Sweep

Keith Staton and Ben Alison each threw a complete game in MNU's double header sweep of Peru State on Wednesday. In Game 1, Staton struggled through the first 2 innings allowing 2 walks, a hit batsman, and a single but didn't allow a run as he threw 42 pitches. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the third when pinch runner Donnie MacLeod scored on a Kyle Segraves single for a 1-0 lead. Staton found his groove and threw just 52 pitches in the last 5 innings while allowed just 1 more hit. The senior struck out 6 in his complete game 2-hit shutout. The Pioneers added 3 runs in the sixth highlighted by a 2-out 2-run single from AJ Nunley, and MNU took the first game 4-0. The Pioneers stole 7 bases and managed just 3 singles but each scored at least 1 run. Segraves (1-2, RBI, HBP, SB), Ben Alison (1-3, RBI), and Nunley (1-2, 2 RBI, BB) had the MNU RBIs.

Game 2 was another pitcher's duel as junior Ben Alison took the mound for the Pioneers. He allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits with 7 strikeouts, but the Pioneers could only scratch across 2 runs of their own. In the bottom of the seventh with the score tied at 2, Josh Greer led off with a walk. One out later, pinch hitter Jordan Goliat drew a walk. Kyle Segraves followed with a swinging bunt which resulted in the pitcher slipping on the fielding attempt and loaded the bases. Freshman David Hamlett drilled an 0-1 pitched into the right-center gap, bringing home the winning run and giving the Pioneers their 5th straight victory. David Hamlett (2-4, 2 RBI) and AJ Nunley (1-3, RBI) drove in the runs for MNU.

The Pioneers are 5-4. The next game is the start of the conference schedule with a double header on Saturday at Evangel (5-7) at noon.
