Kyle Olson overcame a shaky first inning to dominate the middle innings and give MNU a 7-3 victory over Missouri Valley on Saturday. After allowing 2 runs on 4 hits in the opening frame, Olson faced just 16 batters from the second through the sixth as the Pioneer offense put up 7. In the bottom of the first, MNU used 3 hits and a Viking error to overcome a 2-run deficit and take a 1-run lead. Two runs in the second and single runs in the third and fourth put the Pioneers up by 5 before rain delayed the game for close to an hour. Olson picked up where he left off and retired the Vikings easily in the fifth and sixth. Missouri Valley rallied for a run and loaded the bases in the seventh before
Justin Huggins closed the game with a 3-pitch strikeout to pick up the save. The rain then picked up again and postponed Game 2.
Olson struck out 6 and walked 2 while scattering 7 hits in 6.2 innings for his 3rd win of the season. And
Kyle Segraves (3-3, R, RBI, 2 SB),
David Hamlett (1-3, R, RBI, SAC),
Jarid Renzelman (2-4, R, RBI), and
Ben Alison (2-4, 2 R, 2B, 3B, RBI, SB) led the offense.
The Pioneers are 12-7 (5-2 HAAC). The next game is Tuesday at Culver-Stockton 17-7 (10-0) at 1:00.
