In the 2011 home opener, the Pioneers split a double header with Ottawa on Wednesday. In Game 1, MNU took a 2-0 first-inning lead when Kyle Segraves led off with a single and was moved up with a bunt. Jarid Renzelman and Tim Purdin followed with back-to-back singles to bring in a run, and Dave Staton's RBI groundout completed the scoring. Unfortunately, the Pioneers didn't score again. A 2-out 2-run Ottawa homer in the top of the second inning tied the game, and 3 runs in the third and another in the fourth put the Braves up by 6. The Pioneers made some noise in the top of the seventh when they loaded the bases with one out, but a double play ended the threat and moved MNU to 0-4 on the young season.
Kyle Segraves (3-4, R), David Hamlett (1-2, BB, SAC), and Darrell Huffman (1-2, BB) reached base multiple times.
In Game 2, the Pioneers took control of the contest with consecutive 3-run innings to take a 6-run lead. In the bottom of the second, Jordan Goliat and Josh Greer were both hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With 2 outs, Kyle Segraves singled home a run and David Hamlett doubled home 2 more to give MNU a 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third, Tim Purdin and Dave Staton reached base with no outs. One out later, Josh Greer launched his first career home run deep to right center on an 0-2 count to put the Pioneers up by 6. Ottawa got back in the game with 2 runs in the fifth, but the Pioneers answered right back with 2 of their own in the bottom of the inning. MNU held the lead and took Game 2 by the score of 8-2.
Tino Luna (1-1) picked up his first victory of the season, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with 6 strikeouts in 5 innings of work. Justin Huggins finished the game with 2 innings of no-hit pitching with 3 strikeouts. Kyle Segraves (1-2, R, RBI, 2 BB), David Hamlett (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 BB), Tim Purdin (1-2, R, 2B, 2 BB), Josh Greer (1-2, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI), and Kevin Liddle (2-3, R, 2B, SB) led the offense.
