The Pioneers opened the 2011 season with a tough test at perennial power Oklahoma City University on Friday. The #7 Stars defeated MNU 2-1 on a walk-off single with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th.
Matt Netherton allowed just 1 run on 2 hits, but a high pitch count limited the junior righthander to 4 innings. Sophomore lefty
Tino Luna entered the game in the 5th and held OCU scoreless until the 9th.
The Pioneers plated a run in the 5th when
Kyle Segraves doubled with one and moved to third on a wild pitch.
Ben Alison's groundout tied the game, and the pitcher's duel ensued. Luna faced just 3 batters in 4 consecutive innings, but a one-out double in the bottom of the 9th set up the winning run. A two-out single ended the game and handed MNU their first loss of the season.
Kyle Segraves (2-4, R, 2 2B) and
Jarid Renzelman (1-3, BB) reached base twice.
The Pioneers are 0-1. The next game is a double header on Saturday at Oklahoma City starting at 1:00.
