Segraves, Helms, and Liddle Come Up Big in Sweep

The Pioneers continued their late inning dramatics with a walk-off victory in game one of a sweep of Benedictine on Friday. Lefty Harrison Helms was great on the mound, allowing just 5 hits and 1 earned run, but the Pioneers couldn't get anything going offensively and found themselves trailing 2-1 in the seventh inning. With one out, Kirk Nungester reached on an error and Donnie MacLeod pinch ran. MacLeod promptly stole second, and Cody Fuqua reached on a walk. AJ Nunley singled to left, scoring MacLeod and tying the game, and Kyle Segraves nailed an 0-2 pitch deep to right center to end the game. It's Segraves' second walk-off double in the last two weeks, and the Pioneers' 5th of the season. Helms moves to 4-3 on the season, and Segraves (1-4, 2B, RBI), Dave Staton (1-3, RBI), and Nunley (1-2, RBI) had the RBIs for MNU in the 3-2 victory.

In game two, Kevin Liddle allowed a run in the first inning, but shut down the Ravens the rest of the way as the Pioneers put up 6 runs. MNU scored in the second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth innings as Liddle worked his way through the Benedictine lineup. MNU's single run in the 6th inning was on Kyle Segraves' straight steal of home with two outs; the Pioneers' second such steal of the season. Kyle Segraves (3-4, 2 R, 3 SB), Ben Alison (2-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Jarid Renzelman (2-4, RBI, SB), and Josh Greer (2-3, RBI) had multi-hit games.

The Pioneers are 19-19 (12-10 HAAC). The next double header is Saturday at Benedictine (6-29, 6-16) at 1:00 PM.
