The Pioneers endured a rough day at Robbie Jones Field at the hands of Avila on Thursday. In game one, Avila took the lead when a leadoff double came around to score. MNU threatened in the bottom of the inning, but a double play bailed out the Eagles and the Pioneers missed an opportunity. Avila broke the game open in the second with four runs on four hits to take a 5-0 lead and the Pioneers could not recover. MNU made a game of it in the third when
Darrell Huffman's triple chased home
Kyle Segraves, who had singled.
Jarid Renzelman brought Huffman home with a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-2, but Avila added two runs of their own in the fifth to finish out the scoring and MNU lost 7-2.
Kyle Segraves (1-1, R, 2 BB) and
Darrell Huffman (1-2, R, 3B, RBI, SH) led the offense.
Game two was nothing short of a disaster for the Pioneers. MNU found themselves trailing 3-0 in the second inning when they rallied for two runs, but that was as close as it got. Avila exploded for 11 runs on 7 hits in the fourth inning and added 8 more runs on 4 hits in the fifth. The game ended after the fifth inning via the 10-run rule and the final was 22-2.
Tim Purdin (1-2, R) and
Ben Alison (1-2, R) scored MNU's 2 runs.
The Pioneers are 12-16 (5-7 HAAC). The next game is Friday at Avila (21-8, 10-4) at 1:00 PM.
