Ottawa was the home team on MNU's campus and took 2 games from the Pioneers on Monday. In game 1, Ottawa jumped on top in the first inning with an unearned run. MNU came right back with 3 runs in the top of the second, but Ottawa scored 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning. MNU allowed 2 more runs in the 4th to fall behind 6-4, but the Pioneers threatened to tie the game in the 5th. They loaded the bases with one out and trailed by just 1, but MNU could not push across the tying run. MNU managed to get runners in scoring position in both the 6th and 7th innings, but the clutch hit never came and the Pioneers fell 6-5.
Jarid Renzelman (4-4, 2 R, 2B), Dave Staton (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, BB), and
Josh Greer (1-3, 3B, 2 RBI) led the offense.
In game 2, Ottawa scored 12 runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. The Pioneers were one out away from losing via the 10-run rule when they exploded for 7 runs in the 5th to bring the score to 16-9. The Braves added a run in the 6th and 4 more Pioneers runs in the 7th made the final score 17-13 in favor of Ottawa, and the sweep was complete.
Tim Purdin (3-5, 2 R, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) and
Jarid Renzelman (2-3, R, HR, RBI, BB) had multi-hit games for MNU.
The Pioneers are 9-8 (2-0 HAAC). The next game is Tuesday at Lindenwood (18-8, 3-3) at 4 PM.
