Pioneers Win First Road Game

MNU is 3-0 after its 21st straight victory over Culver-Stockton on Saturday. The Pioneers got off to a slow start with a punt and an interception on their first 2 drives, but the defense forced Wildcat punts to keep the game scoreless. MNU put together a 7-play 66-yard touchdown drive ending with a 21-yard pass from Trent Hedlund to Chris Fields, and the MNU stopped Culver on 4th down to get the ball back. Another MNU turnover gave the Wildcats an opportunity, but Derek Pollox picked off a pass and returned it to the 28-yard line. After a 15-yard penalty, Hedlund connected with Javon Taylor for a 43-yard touchdown pass and a 14-0 lead.

The first play of Culver's ensuing drive, the Wildcats broke through for an 84-yard touchdown run to cut the lead in half. But MNU's Cameron Rogers returned the kickoff 89 yards to the 1-yard line, and Ashtin Johnson punched it in for a 21-7 lead. A Wildcat field goal made the score 21-10 at halftime.

MNU scored first in the second half on a Hedlund-to-Zach Brandsted touchdown pass, and began the 4th quarter with a DJ Kawewehi 3-yard touchdown run to put the game away. Cristian Casillas knocked through a 17-yard field goal late in the game, and MNU won 38-13.

Trent Hedlund passed for a career-high 305 yards and 3 touchdowns. Javon Taylor, DJ Kawewehi, and Charles Quainoo led a rushing attack with 37 carries for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. And Chris Fields had 3 catches for 82 yards and a score.

Luke Elam led the defense with 13 tackles. Justin Vargas had 9 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Aaron Mossbarger recorded 3 tackles for loss and a sack. Eric Irvin had 3 pass break-ups and a forced fumble. And Derek Pollox had 2 pass break-ups and an interception.
