Pioneers Fall at CMU

MNU suffered its first loss of the season in a 24-18 decision at Central Methodist on Saturday. A rough first half was too much to overcome, and CMU defeated MNU for the first time since 1991. The Eagles took the opening kickoff 70 yards to the MNU 21, but the Pioneers came up with a 4th down stop to thwart the threat. On the ensuing drive, a bad snap ended up in the end zone for a safety, and CMU never lost the lead.

The Eagles picked off MNU on the next drive, and converted the turnover into a touchdown (PAT no good) for an 8-0 lead. MNU answered with a 1-play 73-yard touchdown drive as Javon Taylor broke through, but the PAT was blocked and MNU trailed 8-6. Another interception by CMU resulted in a short field and a touchdown, and another bad snap resulted in a safety to give the Eagles a 17-6 lead. CMU closed the half with an 8-play 49-yard touchdown drive, and MNU headed to the locker room trailing 24-6.

The defense held firm throughout the second half, and late in the 3rd quarter, Javon Taylor once again broke through for a 19-yard touchdown (PAT failed) and MNU trailed 24-12. Early in the 4th, Taylor ripped off a 48-yard touchdown run (PAT blocked) to get the Pioneers within 6. With 2 minutes left, MNU got into the red zone after a 50-yard pass from Trent Hedlund to Deron Kirkwood, but a stop on 4th and 1 at the 13-yard line ended the threat and the game went to the Eagles.

Javon Taylor carried 23 times for a career-high 220 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the offense. And Mason Mathews had 7 tackles including 3 sacks for 22 yards to lead the defense.

MNU is 3-1 (2-1 HAAC). The next game is Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium for the Gridiron Challenge vs. #9 Missouri Valley (3-1, 3-0) at 3:00.
