Box Score 2 The Pioneer Basketball teams played host to a couple of ranked Benedictine squads and MNU came away with 2 convincing victories on Saturday.
In the women's game, #5 MNU and #14 Benedictine played evenly through the first 10 minutes until the Pioneers used a 7-0 run to get some separation. A 9-point lead was cut to 2 at halftime after an 8-0 run by the Ravens. Benedictine stayed hot and built a 4-point lead early in the second half, but the Pioneers put together an 11-0 run to push the lead back to 7. The final 10 minutes were all MNU as the lead ballooned to 19 by the time the final horn sounded, and MNU won 85-66.
Rachel Boan led a balanced attack in the 3 main categories with 15 points, 7 rebounds, and a career-high 7 assists.
Kelsey Balcom had 13 points and also had a career-high 7 assists.
CJ Wesemann and
Megan Balcom recorded 11 points apiece.
Daria Sprew added 9 points and 6 rebounds. And
Martyna Kudziela was 4-4 from the field for 8 points.
MNU is 13-1 (5-0 HAAC). The next game is Thursday at home vs. Peru State (3-12, 1-4) at 5:30.
In the men's game, MNU used a hot start to build a 12-point lead over #15 Benedictine after 10 minutes of play. The lead was 20 with 3 minutes to go in the first half when the Ravens closed with a 7-0 run to get within 13. In the second half, Benedictine got the deficit down to 7 three times, but the Pioneers held them off each time and won 95-86. MNU shot 61% for the game.
Luke Thomas had 23 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists on just 6 shot attempts (14 FTs).
Nick Syrie had 20 points, 8 assists, and 4 steals.
Nate Launius had 18 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.
Brandon Newton had 13 points in 16 minutes off the bench.
Justin Randall had 7 rebounds and 3 blocks. And
Conner Langrehr was 4-5 for 10 points.
