OLATHE, Kan. – MNU swept a double header from Cottey on Tuesday, winning their 5th consecutive 1-run game. In
Game 1, neither team could get much going with the wind howling straight in, but Cottey managed a 2-out bloop single to bring home 2 in the top of the 5th. In the bottom of the 6th,
Alli VanLanker tied the game with a 2-out RBI single, and the game remained tied into the 9th. Cottey converted their tie-break runner in the top of the 9th, and MNU tied it again with a bunt and a single. Another bunt loaded the bases with no outs, and
Dakoda Hobbs won it with a sacrifice fly.
Game 1 Turning Point
Alli VanLanker's game-tying single in the 6th kept MNU alive.
Game 1 Individual Leaders
Mandy Brown struck out 2 in a 9-inning complete game victory. And
Danica Hobbs (2-4, R),
Alli VanLanker (1-3, R, RBI, Sac), and
Aliyah Robinson (1-1, RBI) led the offense.
In
Game 2, Cottey struck first in the opening frame with a three-run homer to center, giving the Comets an early 3-0 lead. MNU answered in the bottom of the second with a three-run rally of their own.
Brie Manwarren got things started with an RBI double, and
Danica Hobbs followed with a two-run single to tie the game at 3.
The Comets briefly regained the lead in the third, but MNU continued to battle. The Pioneers evened the score in the fifth on an RBI single by
Molly Nicas. Then, in the sixth,
Abby Schulte delivered the decisive blow, crushing a two-run homer to left to give MNU a 6-4 lead.
Cottey threatened in the seventh, pushing across a run to cut the deficit to one, but pitcher
Grace Berlage shut the door to secure the win.

Abby Schulte's two-run home run in the sixth gave MNU the lead for good.
