Pioneers Split with Valley on Senior Day

OLATHE, Kan. - The Pioneers dropped Game 1 but took Game 2 in a double header split on Saturday. In Game 1, both starting pitchers dominated through 4 scoreless innings. Valley broke through in the top of the 5th with a double and two bunts to load the bases with 1 out. A sacrifice fly made it 1-0, and 2 walks and an infield single gave the Vikings a 2-0 lead in the 6th. In the bottom of the 6th, Cordelia Hanger singled, stole second, and scored to cut the deficit in half, but the Pioneers couldn't score again and fell 2-1.

Game 1 Turning Point
Valley's run in the 6th proved to be the game winner.

Game 1 Individual Leaders
Mykala Johnico struck out 11 in a complete game loss. And Cordelia Hanger (1-3, R, SB) and Nyah Brown (2-3, RBI) were the offense.

In Game 2, Emma Jones had an RBI single in the 2nd and a 2-run double in the 4th to put MNU up 3-0. Valley answered immediately with a 3-run 5th to tie the game, but Kelly Stoakes drilled a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 5th to put the Pioneers back up 5-3. Valley loaded the bases with 1 out in the 6th, but MNU escaped with consecutive outs at the plate to keep the lead. In the 7th, Valley scored a run with 2 outs, but Mykala Johnico took the circle and recorded a strikeout to preserve the lead as MNU won 5-4.

Game 2 Turning Point
Kelly Stoakes' 2-run homer in the 5th was the game winner.


Game 2 Individual Leaders
Mandy Brown struck out 3 in 2 innings of relief for the win. Mykala Johnico struck out the only batter she faced for the save. And Kelly Stoakes (1-3, R, HR, 2 RBI), Maddie Brooks (2-3, 2 R), Alli VanLanker (2-2, R, Sac), and Emma Jones (2-3, 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense.
