OLATHE, Kan. - The Pioneers swept a 4-game series vs. Grand View on Sunday & Monday. In
Game 1, the Vikings scored single runs in the 1st, 2nd, 5th, and 6th. And the Pioneers scored 1 in the 1st, 2 in the 3rd, and 2 in the 5th to take the first game 5-4.
Game 1 Turning Point
MNU's 2-run 5th put them ahead for good.
Game 1 Individual Leaders
Zach Trevino struck out 5 in a 6-inning victory.
John Barry retired both batters he faced in the 7th.
Reece Helland got the final out for a save. And
Brentt Olmo (3-4, R, 2B, RBI), Javier Melenndez (2-2, R, 2B, RBI), and
Noah Castillo (2-4, R, RBI) had multi-hit games.
In
Game 2, Grand View scored a run in the top of the 1st, but a
Noah Castillo 3-run homer put MNU up 3-1 in the bottom of the inning. The score was still 3-1 until the top of the 5th, when a full count bases loaded gapper brought home 3 for a 4-3 Viking lead. In the bottom of the 5th,
Javier Melendez tied the game with a solo homer, and
Drew Woodley put MNU ahead with an RBI double. In the top of the 7th with 2 outs, a wind-blown double tied the game with 2 outs, and an RBI single put Grand View ahead. But the Pioneers came back in the bottom of the 7th. A bad-hop single, a bunt, and 2 walks loaded the bases with 1 out.
Brycen Sherwood tied the game with a single, but the potential winning run was thrown out at home for the second out.
Javier Melendez followed with a single to right, and the Pioneers celebrated the victory.
Game 2 Turning Point
MNU's 2-run 7th turned a deficit into a win.

Adam Gray struck out 5 in 4.1 innings of a no-decision. And

Kaden Owens (2-4, 2B),
Drew Woodley (2-4, R, 2B, RBI) and
Kristian Crespo (1-2, 2B, 2 BB) led the offense.
In
Game 3, Grand View got on the board with a solo homer in the top of the 1st, but starting pitcher
Noah Castillo hit a grand slam in the bottom of the inning for a 4-1 lead. The Vikings scored 1 in the top of the 2nd, but a
Brycen Sherwood solo shot got the run right back. GVU scored 2 in the 3rd and another in the 4th to tie it, but
Javier Melendez gave MNU a 7-5 lead with a 2-run blast in the bottom of the 4th.
Alex Meyers entered the game in the top of the 5th, and pitched 3 shutout innings to preserve the lead and earn the save. MNU piled on with 10 in the 5th and 2 in the 6th for a 19-5 victory.
Game 3 Turning Point
Javier Melenedez's 2-run homer in the 4th put MNU up for good.

Kristian Hurtado got the win with 0.2 innings of shutout relief.
Alex Meyers earned the save with 3 shutout innings. And

In
Game 4, Grand View led the whole way until the very end. A 5-0 2nd inning lead was cut to 1 with two 2-run homers from
Dionathan Cornett and
Willy Borquez in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Vikings kept scoring and led 10-4 in the 4th. MNU rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to get back in the game, but the score was still 10-8 heading to the bottom of the 7th. Back-to-back walks put the tying run on base, and 1 out later, a
Willy Borquez walkoff 3-run homer gave the Pioneers the sweep.
Game 4 Turning Point

Jackson Noland struck out 2 in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Logan Burbach got the win with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. And
Brycen Sherwood (2-4, R, 2B, RBI),
Dionathan Cornet (1-3, 2 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB), and
Willy Borquez (4-4, 3 R, 2B, 2 HR, 5 RBI) had big games at the plate.
