SHREVEPORT, La. - The 4-seed Pioneers defeated 3-seed Morningside 12-7 to advance to the championship round of the Shreveport Bracket in the Opening Round on Tuesday. MNU jumped out to a 7-1 lead by scoring multiple runs in each of the first 3 innings. Noah Castillo and Joshua Martinez recorded RBI doubles in the 1st inning, Javier Melendez added a 2-out 2-RBI double in the 2nd, and Drew Woodley and Joshua Hinojos each had an RBI in the 3rd. In the bottom of the 3rd, MNU seemed to be out of the inning with no damage, but a catcher's interference kept Morningside alive. A single, an error, and another single brought home 3 unearned runs, and the Mustangs were back in the game. Brycen Sherwood answered immediately with a leadoff homer in the top of the 4th...
...but Morningside fought back with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Kristian Hurtado entered the game and kept the Mustangs at bay, allowing just a single run in the 6th. MNU extended the lead with a Dionathan Cornet RBI double, a wild pitch, and a Joshua Martinez sacrifice fly in the 6th. A Sean Maple RBI single in the 7th capped the scoring, and MNU held on to win 12-7.
