Pioneers Start Fast, Hang on at Valley

MARSHALL, Mo. - The Pioneers started strong and held on for a 5-point victory at Missouri Valley on Saturday. After forcing the Vikings to punt on their opening drive, MNU went 92 yards in 7 plays - capped by a 38-yard touchdown pass from Blake Atkins to Kobe Hardin - to take an early lead. The defense forced another punt, and MNU scored quickly - with 40+-yard completions to Hardin and Torin Owolabi - to go up 14-0. Bryley Ray gave the ball right back to the offense with an interception, and the Pioneers went 30 yards in 3 plays for a 21-point opening quarter.

The 21-0 lead lasted through halftime until Valley struck for a 43-yard touchdown pass early in the 3rd. The Vikings got within a score with a 70-yard touchdown drive, but the Pioneers answered immediately. A quick drive with plays of 24, 12, and 35 yards resulted in a Caleb Tanis touchdown reception, and MNU led 28-15. MVC scored early in the 4th to get within 5, but the Pioneer defense forced a punt with 5 minutes to go and the offense kept the ball to the final horn.

"This was a great win over another tough division opponent," said head coach Paul Hansen. "The guys had a great week of practice and preparation, and it showed. We will enjoy this win and get ready for another tough opponent in Central Methodist."

Turning Point
MNU's 21-point 1st quarter set the tone.

Individual Leaders
Blake Atkins was 18-31 for 367 yards and 3 touchdowns. Kobe Hardin had 8 catches for 141 yards and a score. Colinje Wilridge had a rushing and receiving touchdown. Caleb Tanis caught 4 passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. And Jackson Berck had 12 tackles, including 2 tackles for loss and a sack, a forced fumble, and 3 punts inside the 20.
