Easten Garrett and
Jhon Vargas combined for a 2-hit 1-run victory in MNU's 2-1 win in the first round of the Heart Conference Tournament on Thursday. The Pioneers scored first when
Joshua Crispin led off the 3rd inning with a double and ended up at 3rd on the throw. One out later,
Jeremie Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to right, and MNU led 1-0. The Ravens tied it with a 2-out RBI double in the 5th, but the Pioneers answered right back.
Austin Healy led off the bottom of the 5th with a triple, and Crispin knocked him in with an RBI groundout.
Jhon Vargas retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced, and MNU won a tight game 2-1.
Game 1 Turning Point
Austin Healy tripled and scored to start the 5th, and MNU held the 2-1 lead the rest of the way.
Game 1 Individual Leaders
Easten Garrett struck out 3 and allowed no hits in 3.2 innings in a no-decision.
Jhon Vargas struck out 7 in 5.1 innings of relief for the win. And
Joshua Crispin (3-4, R, 2B, RBI, SB),
