OLATHE, Kan. - MNU came up with a signature win in a 99-94 victory over #4-ranked William Penn on Wednesday. The Pioneers took an early 7-point lead, but the Statesmen used the next 10 minutes to chip away and build a 7-point lead of their own. MNU responded with a 14-2 run and took a 4-point lead into halftime.
The second half was tight, but the Statesmen led by 5 with 4 minutes to go. A
Patrick Cairns free throw and a
Dante Scroggins 3 cut the deficit to 1, and Cairns finished a fast break with a layup to give MNU the lead. Penn scored on their next possession, but a
Trey Brown desperation 3 at the end of the shot clock put MNU up by 2 with 2 minutes to play. After a stop,
Jake Alexander pushed the lead to 4 with a floater in the lane, and
Dakota Quinn blocked the ensuing Penn shot to send the crowd into a frenzy. Free throws extended the lead in the final minute, and MNU won by 5.
