Jonathan Green scored 27 points in 29 minutes as MNU opened the Jeff Uphaus Memorial Classic with a hard-fought 88-83 victory over Kansas Christian College on Thursday. The Pioneers took the opening tip for a Green dunk but the Falcons stayed with MNU in the opening 10 minutes. An 8-0 run gave MNU a 9-point lead, and the margin increased to 12 with 5 minutes left in the half. But KCC again fought back to get within 5 at the break.
Kansas Christian came out hot in the second half and quickly erased the deficit. Then the Falcons went on a 12-0 run to take a 9-point lead with 14 minutes remaining. Junior transfer
Dakota Quinn made 2 buckets to cut the deficit to 5, and MNU started to chip away. The Pioneers tied the game with 9 minutes to play, but KCC rallied again with a 7-0 run to seize control. MNU responded with an 11-0 run to take a 3-point lead, but the Falcons shot back with 7 straight to go up by 4 with under 3 minutes left.
Jonathan Green scored the next 7 points in crunch time, and the Pioneers made their free throws in the final minute to hold off the Falcons.
Turning Point
With MNU trailing by 2 with 2 minutes left,
Dakota Quinn blocked a layup which led to a game-changing 3-point play to give the Pioneers the lead for good.
Individual Leaders
Jonathan Green shot 11-15 for 27 points and 3 steals.
Dante Scroggins had 17 points and 9 rebounds.
Trey Brown hit three 3-pointers en route to 17 points and 9 assists.
Dakota Quinn owned the paint with 13 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks, and 3 assists. And
Cameron Brady added 8 points on 4-6 shooting off the bench.
