Pioneers Fall in Final Second

The Basics

Records: MNU (11-6, 10-4), Mt. Mercy (9-10, 6-9)
Location: Bell Family Arena - Olathe, Kan.

OLATHE, Kan. - MNU overcame a 14-point deficit and had a 3-point lead in the closing seconds, but Mt. Mercy pulled off the miracle finish to beat the Pioneers 58-57 on Saturday. With injured starters Jovana Jovovic, Bailey Rinehart, and Tanchelle Hollingsworth (played just 10 minutes) out of the game, the MNU offense struggled. The Mustangs opened with a 12-2 run and led 33-21 at halftime. With 6 minutes to play in the 3rd, MNU trailed 42-28. But a 14-0 run tied the game. A 3-pointer from Kalie Uher gave MNU their first lead early in the 4th, and the game went back and forth until Lyndsee Johnson's 2 free throws put the Pioneers up by 3 with 15 seconds left. The Mustangs scored on their next possession, then MNU turned the ball over on the inbounds pass. Mount Mercy's heavily contested twisting falling shot fell through in the final second, and MNU lost by 1.

Turning Point
An inbounds pass turnover with 5 seconds to play turned a likely Pioneer win into a great chance for Mt. Mercy.

Jayden Oliver had a game-high 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Lyndsee Johnson recorded a career-high 12 points and a career-high 6 assists to go along with 2 steals. Whitney Moia had 10 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks. And Tristin Wicks had 6 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
