Pioneers Sweep Yellowjackets

The Pioneers evened their Heart record with a road sweep at Graceland on Wednesday. The scores were 4-1 and 4-3. In Game 1, MNU got on the board in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Lydia Reyes. Macie Jones added to the lead with a solo homer in the top of the sixth, and the Pioneers rallied for 2 more in the top of the seventh. Megan Deiter allowed just 1 run on 2 hits in 5 innings for the win. Clarisa Cortez tossed 2 hitless innings for the save. And Alexis Pacheco (3-3, 2 R, 2B, BB), Korrissa Aguilar (2-3, Sac), and Macie Jones (3-3, R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, SB) led the offense.

In Game 2, Graceland rallied for 2 in the bottom of the second, but the Pioneers responded in the third. Jess Peacock's RBI single cut the deficit in half, and Lydia Reyes followed with a 2-run double to give MNU a 3-2 lead. Graceland tied it in the bottom of the fifth, and the game went into the eighth. With 2 outs and nobody on in the eighth, Macie Jones doubled and Lydia Reyes knocked her in to give MNU a 4-3 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Graceland had a runner on second with 2 outs. A single to center gave the Yellowjackets hope, but the tying run was gunned down at the plate to preserve the victory. Taylor Pearcy pitched 6.2 innings of relief for the victory. And Alexis Pacheco (2-4, R, 3 SB), Lydia Reyes (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI, SB), and Kinsey Kiser (2-3, SB) had 2 hits apiece.

MNU is 15-11 (7-7 Heart). The next double header is Friday at home vs. Saint Mary (18-23) starting at 5:00.
