Pioneers Take 3 of 4 at Peru

The Pioneers took the first 2 games of a 4-game weekend series at Peru State on Friday. In the top of the first in Game 1, MNU jumped all over Peru and loaded the bases with no outs. Nelson Santiago drove in 2 with a single, and Jeremie Gonzalez drove in 2 more with a double. A wild pitch brought home a fifth run, but Peru came right back in the bottom of the inning. Two doubles, a walk, and a hit batsman brought home a run and loaded the bases, and a grand slam tied the game. MNU scored 1 in the top of the second, but Peru scored twice in the bottom to take a 7-6 lead. The game settled in the middle innings, and MNU was able to tie it in the fourth. Phil Graham recovered from the shaky start to retire 7 in a row, and he breezed through the final four innings to finish the game. Jason Jones hit a 2-run homer in the top of the sixth to give MNU the lead, and the Pioneers tacked on 2 more for an 11-7 victory.

Graham struck out 6 and struck out 6 with 123 pitches in a gutty performance. And Jordan Eckley (3-5, 2 R, 3 2B), Logan Tills (2-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Jason Jones (3-4, 3 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, HBP), Nelson Santiago (3-5, 2 R, 2 RBI, SB), and Jeremie Gonzalez (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) led the offense.

In Game 2, the Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the first, but starter Emilio Gonzales retired 13 in a row and dominated the rest of the game. In the top of the second, an RBI groundout tied the game, and Jordan Eckley followed with a 2-out 3-run homer to put MNU up 4-1. Robert Berning's RBI single added a run in the sixth, and MNU won 5-1. Gonzales struck out 5 and allowed just 3 hits for a complete game victory. And Jordan Eckley (1-3, R, HR, 3 RBI, SB, HBP) and Robert Berning (2-2, RBI, BB) led the offense.

In Game 3, the contest was close until MNU blew it open in the seventh. Robert Berning gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead with a 2-run double in the third, but the Bobcats tied it in the bottom of the inning. Jordan Eckley's 2-run homer in the top of the fourth put MNU ahead for good. Peru scored 1 in the fifth, but MNU got in back in the sixth. In the top of the seventh, MNU took advantage of a dropped 3rd strike and an error to get runners in scoring position. Eckley drove them both in with a single, and Jeremie Gonzalez hit a 2-out grand slam to ice the game. The Pioneers won 12-3. Blake Robberon allowed 4 hits and struck out 5 in 5 innings for the win. Lenzie Foley struck out 3 in the final 2 innings for the save. And Jordan Eckley (2-5, 2 R, HR, 4 RBI), Logan Tills (2-4, 2 R, 2B), Robert Berning (1-2, 2B, 2 RBI, 3 BB), and Jeremie Gonzalez (2-4, R, GS, 4 RBI, BB, SB) led the offense.

In Game 4, Peru scored quickly with a run in the bottom of the first, but MNU scored 5 runs on 2 hits and 3 errors in the top of the second. The Bobcats scored 2 in the bottom of the second, 1 in the third, and 1 in the fourth to tie the game. Eckley's 2-out RBI double gave MNU a 6-5 lead in the sixth, but Peru tied it again in the bottom of the inning. The game went to extras, and the Bobcats won 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth on a no-out bases-loaded balk. Eckley (2-4, 2B, 3 RBI) and Jeremie Gonzalez (2-4, R, 2B) had 2 hits apiece.

MNU is 24-7 (9-5 Heart). The next double header is a non-conference contest on Tuesday at home vs. College of the Ozarks (20-15) at 1:00.
