Pioneers Split at William Penn

Blake Robberson's gem in Game 2 salaved a split at William Penn on Saturday. In Game 1 (7-inning game), the Statesmen scored 1 in the first and took advantage of 2 MNU errors to score 4 runs in the second. The Pioneers got one back in the top of the third and another in the fourth, but couldn't overcome the deficit in an 8-2 loss. Nelson Santiago (2-3, BB) had 2 of MNU's 8 hits.

In Game 2 (9-inning game), Blake Robberson kept WPU off the board into the eighth inning. MNU scored in the top of the first when Jordan Eckley doubled and scored on a Jason Jones double. Robberson retired 10 in a row from the fourth to the eighth to maintain the 1-0 lead, but a walk and an infield single put Statesmen on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Emilio Gonzales took the mound and WPU tried a squeeze play which failed, eliminating the runner from 3rd. The next batter grounded out to end the inning, and a Kelvin Perez 2-out RBI single put the Pioneers up 2-0 in the ninth. Gonzales recorded a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to complete the save. Robberson allowed just 2 hits and struck out 5 for the victory. And Jordan Eckley (2-4, R, 2 2B) had 2 hits.

MNU is 21-5 (6-4 Heart). The next game is a single non-conference 9-inning game on Tuesday at NCAA D2 William Jewell at 2:30.
