Pioneers Advance to Elite 8 for 1st Time in D1

NAIA Recap | The Pioneers advanced to the Elite 8 for the first time since 2007 with a 59-51 victory over #10 Freed-Hardeman on Friday. MNU moved to NAIA Division 1 in the 08-09 season and Friday marked the first time the Pioneers advanced past the Sweet 16 since the transition.

FHU got off to a 6-0 start in the opening minutes, but MNU responded with a 19-2 run to take a lead they would not relinquish. At halftime the Pioneers led 32-24, but Freed closed the gap to 3 points with 2 minutes remaining in the third quarter. MNU went on a 9-0 run to close the period, however, and took a 12-point lead into the final stanza. The Pioneers held on to win by 8 and advance to the quarterfinals.

MNU was out-rebounded 45-40 and had 3 more turnovers than FHU, but the Pioneer defense kept the Lady Lions to 20-71 shooting (28%).

Jasmine Webb shot 9-14 for 18 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Megan Balcom added 12 points and 4 assists. And Nathalie Felipe had 8 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.

MNU is 29-5. The next game is Saturday vs. #18 Lindsey Wilson (28-6) at 8:00.
