Pioneers Knock off William Penn to Tie for First

There's a 3-way tie atop the Heart after #20 MNU's 87-78 victory over #7 William Penn on Saturday. It is MNU's 9th straight victory. The Statesmen led MNU by 1 game in the standings and jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Pioneers used a 7-1 run to tie the game after 5 minutes of play. MNU stayed hot and grabbed an 8-point lead with a 13-2 run, but William Penn fought back to get within 1 at the 2:38 mark of the first half. MNU outscored Penn 9-1 to close the period to take a 9-point lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Pioneers started hot and built a 15-point lead with 13:34 left in the contest. But WPU's Kevin Smith got hot and almost brought the Statesmen all the way back by himself. After scoring just 1 point in the first half, Smith hit 7 straight shots and scored 20 points in the final 11 minutes and got Penn within 2 points. But a 10-2 run over the next 4 minutes put MNU back up by 10, and the Pioneers hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off WPU.

Justin Jamison was 6-8 for 16 points and 2 blocks. Jordan Whelan added 15 points and 6 rebounds off the bench. Nick Syrie had 14 points, 9 rebounds, 8 assists, and 2 steals. Jonas Page had 12 points. Gabriel Jordan had 11 points and 6 assists. And Marshawn Arnold had 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.

MNU is 18-6 (12-4 Heart). The next game is another 1st-place battle at Peru State (15-8, 12-4) on Wednesday at 7:30.
