Pioneers Beat Peru in Overtime

The Pioneers remain tied for 1st in the Heart after an instant classic 105-104 overtime victory at Peru State on Wednesday. It is MNU's 10th straight win.

Peru State controlled the first half, building a lead as high as 14 before MNU cut it down to 10 at halftime. The Pioneers came out strong in the second half and cut the deficit to 2 after just 3 and a half minutes. The Bobcats responded with a 6-0 run to get back up by 8, but a 10-2 run for the Pioneers tied the game with 14 minutes left. The final 14 minutes of regulation were tight as neither team took more than a 5-point lead. Both defenses held down the stretch, and the game went into overtime tied at 89.

In overtime, Peru State threw the first punch and took a 3-point lead with 3 minutes left. A 4-0 run gave MNU a 1-point lead, but the Bobcats split a pair of free throws to tie it. With 38 seconds left and 8 left on the shot clock, MNU inbounded the ball under the basket. The errant pass went near midcourt, where Gabriel Jordan tracked it down. He found Jonas Page as the shot clock wound down, and the junior drilled a heavily-contested 3-pointer to give MNU their first lead of the period. The Pioneers got a stop at the other end, and Peru was forced to foul. Nick Syrie and Jonas Page hit enough free throws in the final seconds, and Peru's 3 at the buzzer could only close the gap to 1.

Jonas Page recovered from a 1-7 start to hit 6 threes and score 26 points. Nick Syrie had 23 points, 11 assists, and 4 steals. Justin Randall shot 11-15 for 22 points and 6 rebounds. Marshawn Arnold added 12 points and 5 rebounds off the bench. And Jordan Whelan had 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench.

MNU is 19-6 (13-4 Heart). The Pioneers are tied atop the conference with William Penn. The next game is Saturday at home vs. Graceland (15-10, 10-7) at 4:00.
