Pioneers Split Day 1 at WBU

The Pioneers crushed Houston-Victoria before dropping their first game of the season to Wayland Baptist on Friday. In the early game against Houston-Victoria, Christian Quinones led off the bottom of the first with a homer to grab an early lead. After back-to-back hit batsmen, Kelvin Perez launched a 3-run shot to put MNU up 4-0. The Pioneers scored 2 more in the second, and Jeremie Gonzalez homered to lead off the third to spark a 3-run inning. In the top of the fourth, HV got on the board with a solo homer (the first hit allowed by Phillipe Graham in over 10 innings), but MNU responded with a Jason Jones leadoff homer and 11 runs on 5 hits in the bottom of the inning. Another run in the sixth made it 21-1 as Graham cruised.

Phil Graham is 2-0 after striking out 7 and allowing just 2 hits in 6 innings. And Christian Quinones (2-5, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI), Logan Tills (2-2, 4 R, 2B, 2 RBI, BB, HBP), Jordan Eckley (2-3, 2 R, 2 RBI, HBP), Kelvin Perez (2-4, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI), Jason Jones (2-3, 2 R, HR, 3 RBI, BB), and Jeremie Gonzalez (3-5, R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI) had multi-hit games.

In the nightcap, MNU faced host Wayland Baptist who boasted a 9-game win streak. MNU got on the board first when Logan Tills was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on an error. Starter Emilio Gonzales held WBU scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when they rallied for 2 runs to take the lead. MNU tied it in the top of the fifth on a Tills RBI single, but Wayland put together a big 2-out rally in the sixth to take control. A 2-run triple and a wild pitch plated 3 runs, and MNU couldn't answer in the seventh. After an 8-0 start, MNU finally lost 5-2.

Gonzales struck out 8 working into the sixth inning. And Logan Tills (1-1, R, RBI, BB, HBP, SB), Jordan Eckley (1-3), and Robert Berning (1-3) got MNU's 3 hits.

The Pioneers are 8-1. The next games are Saturday at Wayland Baptist (15-3) at noon and Houston-Victoria (1-11) immediately following.
