Macie Jones Walks Off Both Games for Sweep

Sophomore Macie Jones had 2 opportunities to win games and she came through both times in a double header sweep of Ottawa to open the season on Tuesday. The scores were 3-1 and 4-3.

In Game 1, Ottawa loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the third. MNU avoided a big inning with a play at the plate and runner interference to pick up 2 outs, but a walk brought home the first run. In the bottom of the inning, Maddie Johnson led off with a double and was at third with 2 outs. Macie Jones hammered a double to tie the game, and the score remained 1-1 until the seventh. Johnson singled to start the frame and again found herself on third with 2 outs. Jones swung at the first pitch and cleared the left field fence to give the Pioneers the win. Megan Deiter pitched 4 scoreless innings of relief with 6 strikeouts for the victory. And Maddie Johnson (3-4, 2 R, 2B, SB) and Macie Jones (2-3, R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI, BB) carried the offense.

In Game 2, Ottawa scored an unearned run in the first and carried the 1-0 lead into the sixth. A 2-out 2-run double increased the Braves' lead to 3, but the Pioneers rallied in the bottom of the inning. With 1 out, back-to-back singled from Kinsey Kiser and Macie Jones put runners on. With 2 outs, Kimberly Montoya, Britanny Jacobsen, and Natalie Clark recorded consecutive RBI singles to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh with 1 out, Alexis Pacheco singled and stole second. With two outs and Pacheco at third, Macie Jones worked the count full and delivered a single up the middle to capture the victory. Lydia Reyes pitched one inning in relief of Clarisa Cortez to pick up the victory. And Alexis Pacheco (2-4, R, 2B, SB), Kinsey Kiser (2-4, R), Macie Jones (4-4, R, RBI), and Natalie Clark (2-3, RBI) had multi-hit games.

MNU is 2-0. The next double header is Tuesday at St. Mary (3-7) at 1:30.
