Pioneers Hold On, Secure Rocky's 699th

The Pioneers had a 12-point lead with just under 4 minutes to play, but had to hit clutch free throws in the final seconds to beat Missouri Valley 91-88 on Friday. It is MNU's 13th consecutive victory. MNU took control after a tight opening 10 minutes with an 18-3 run to take a 15-point lead. The Pioneers led 44-30 at halftime, but Valley made a run in the second half. A 14-point lead was cut all the way down with a 19-5 spurt, but MNU responded with a 14-2 run to go back up by 12. The Vikings didn't go quietly, however, and used an 11-3 run to get the deficit down to 4. MNU hit just enough free throws down the stretch to win by 3, and Rocky Lamar's career win total now sits at 699.

Justin Randall led the Pioneers with 21 points and 8 rebounds. Jordan Whelan had 17 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals off the bench. Marshawn Arnold added 15 points and 3 steals off the bench. Gabriel Jordan reached double figures with 11. And Nick Syrie had 9 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, and 4 steals.

MNU is 22-6 (16-4 Heart). The next game is Wednesday at Evangel (6-21, 5-14) at 7:30. A victory would be #700 for Coach Lamar and would secure at least a tie for a conference title.
