MNU Wins, Sits Alone in 1st

MNU survived a late scare to win 76-72 over CMU, and William Penn lost at Graceland to give the Pioneers a 1-game lead atop the Heart. The first 10 minutes of the game was sluggish for MNU, as swingman Jonas Page picked up 3 fouls in the opening minutes and the Pioneers couldn't find rhythm. MNU trailed 19-8 with 9:09 remaining in the half, but an 11-4 run got them back in the game. The Pioneers finally tied it with 2:30 left, and Nick Syrie's final-possession bucket put MNU up 35-33 at halftime.

MNU started the second half with a 12-4 run to take a 10-point lead, and pushed it to 16 with 11 minutes to go. But the Eagles didn't go away, and chipped away with a 23-8 run over 8 minutes to get within 1. After a timeout, Gabriel Jordan made back to back field goals to push the lead back to 5. CMU trailed by 2 and had a fast break opportunity with 15 seconds left, but the pass sailed out of bounds and MNU closed it out with a pair of Page free throws.

Nick Syrie had 22 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Gabriel Jordan added 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Jordan Whelan had 15 points and 5 boards off the bench.

MNU has won 12 in a row and is 21-6 overall, 15-4 in the Heart. The next game is Friday at Missouri Valley (13-14, 8-11) at 7:30.
