On Senior Day along with MNU Homecoming the Men's Soccer team extended their win streak with a clinical 1-0 win over Mount Mercy University this afternoon. With a great crowd celebrating MNU's
50th Anniversary, the Pioneers put on a possession clinic. The Mustangs were very organized defensively and managed to keep MNU's high octane offense at bay.
The game started a bit lazy for the Pioneers. It took about 15 minutes for the team to establish a rhythm in the game. In that period, the Mustangs registered the only two shots they would have all afternoon. Once MNU settled in they began to produce opportunities of their own. In the 22nd minute, they scored the only goal of the game.
Frantzly Zephirin caught the Mustang defense napping with a long throw over the top to
Clark Campbell. He collected and played a pass to
Dominic Harrington. He passed across the middle of the box to find a wide open
Matias Cabello. He settled the pass and calmly slotted the ball inside the post for the goal. The Pioneers created a few more chances but most of the play was isolated to the middle of the field.
The second half was essentially played in the Mustang half. They continued to work hard to keep any space around the box from opening up. MNU had a few good opportunities but again most of the play was in the midfield. MNU's
Jonathan Taylor had a set piece goal called back because of offsides. Mount Mercy did not register a shot in the half. Directly after the game, MNU honored this year's senior class.
Caio Barcelos,
Austin Geist,
Yann Passet,
Frantzly Zephirin,
Bryce McClanahan, and
Eduardo Heringer were recognized for their contributions to MNU Soccer.
For the game MNU outshot MMU 9-2, with shots on goal being 3-0. The Mustang goalkeeper was credited with 2 saves.
Yann Passet did not register a save in earning the shutout victory. MMU falls to 8-7 (4-6) on the season. The Pioneers are now 12-2-1 (9-1). The next scheduled game for MNU has been moved. The game against Evangel will now be on Tuesday, October 25th at 3:30pm. Come out to Pioneer Field to support the men in their last regular season home game of the year.
