Syrie's Heroics Key Victory

The Pioneers trailed Baker by 15 at halftime but turned the game around in the second half to win 83-81 in the final seconds on Saturday. Baker was on fire in the first half as they shot 9-11 from beyond the arc to build a big lead. The Wildcats finished the half on a 21-5 run, and only the buzzer could stop the onslaught.

With 11 minutes left in the game, MNU still trailed by 11. Nick Syrie, Jonas Page, and Marshawn Arnold checked into the game after a quick rest, and the Pioneers took off. A 16-0 run over 5 minutes put MNU up by 5, but Baker didn't fade away. The Wildcats responded with a 9-2 run to re-take the lead, and the game was tight down the stretch. With the score tied and 30 seconds left, MNU's Nick Syrie stood near mid court and drained the clock. With 5 seconds to go, he drove into the lane, spun through 2 defenders, and hit a twisting layup while getting fouled to win the game for the Pioneers.

Jonas Page had a game-high 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 blocks. Gabriel Jordan had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Nick Syrie put up 14 points, 9 assists, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. And Jordan Whelan and Marshawn Arnold had 11 points apiece off the bench.

MNU is 14-6 (8-4 Heart). The next game is Wednesday at Culver-Stockton (8-12, 4-8) at 7:30.
