Pioneers Fall in Triple Overtime

The #8 Pioneers traveled to Heart newcomer #19 William Penn and fell 51-48 in triple overtime on Saturday.

MNU controlled the game early as they used the opening drive to go 72 yards in 9 plays for a Trent Hedlund to Gio Gonzalez touchdown. Their second drive started at the MNU 1-yard line but marched 99 yards in 12 plays to take a 14-0 lead on a Hedlund to Wesley Foryoh connection. William Penn got on the board late in the second quarter with a 4-play 98-yard touchdown drive, and the Pioneers took a 14-7 lead into halftime.

The Statesmen used a 12-play 68-yard touchdown drive to tie the game on their first drive of the second half. But the Pioneers' Aaron Mossbarger blocked a punt to set up MNU deep in William Penn territory. Three plays later, Hedlund connected with Dylan Meyers to give MNU a 21-14 lead. WPU responded with a 12-play 79-yard touchdown drive to tie the game again, and then took the lead at the start of the fourth quarter with a 10-play touchdown drive. MNU turned the ball over, but the defense held firm and a bad punt set up the Pioneers at the Penn 37-yard line. Four plays later, Hedlund found Meyers again and the game was tied at 28.

With 4 minutes left, the Pioneers went 75 yards on just 7 plays to take a 35-28 lead, but the Statesmen went 65 yards in 12 plays in 2 minutes to tie the score with 30 seconds left. The Pioneers managed to get in field goal range in the closing seconds, but the kick missed wide left and the game went into overtime.

Both teams recorded field goals in the first overtime, and Penn scored a quick touchdown to open the second. After 3 straight incompletions, Hedlund connected with Foryoh on 4th and 10 for a 25-yard game-tying touchdown.

In the third overtime, Cristian Casillas nailed a 42-yard field goal, but William Penn responded with a 25-yard touchdown pass on their first play to win the game.

"William Penn is a very good team and did a good job of finding a way to win at the end," said head coach Brian Willmer. "We failed to make the stops of defense when needed and we missed a lot of opportunities throughout the game on all three phases. We will grow from the loss, fix our mistakes, and come back a stronger team next week. I was proud of how hard our players fought to the very end of a physical triple overtime game."

Trent Hedlund completed a career-high 27 passes for a career-high 368 yards and a career-high 5 touchdowns. Wesley Foryoh caught 7 balls for 156 yards and 2 touchdowns. Dylan Meyers had 5 catches for 47 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tanner Hamilton recorded a game-high 13 tackles. James Guerrero had 12 tackles including a sack. And Jason Keobounheung had 8 tackles and 4 pass break-ups.

The Pioneers are 1-1. The next game is Saturday at Graceland (1-1) at 6:00.
