Pioneers Fall in OT at Graceland

For the second straight week, MNU fell on the road in overtime. In a low-scoring affair, Graceland topped the Pioneers 23-17 to move MNU to 1-2 on the season.

The evening started poorly as Graceland forced a 3-and-out on the opening drive. The punt snap was launched into the end zone where the Yellowjackets recovered it for a touchdown. The PAT went wide, however, and MNU trailed by just 6. MNU finally got on the board with a Cristian Casillas 30-yard field goal, but Graceland answered with a field goal of their own and took a 9-3 lead into halftime.

Late in the 3rd quarter, Tanner Hamilton picked off the Graceland quarterback in the red zone. On MNU's first play of the ensuing drive, Trent Hedlund connected with Wesley Foryoh for 54-yard pass to set up MNU near the goal line. Javon Taylor finished the quick drive with a touchdown, and MNU took a 10-9 lead. Hamilton ended Graceland's next drive with another interception, but MNU was forced to punt. Early in the 4th on 3rd and 11, Hedlund fired a short pass to Drake Tofi for a first down, but Tofi wasn't satisfied and kept charging 50 more yards for a touchdown to give the Pioneers a 17-9 lead.

MNU stopped Graceland on 4th down with 8 minutes remaining, but couldn't put together a clock-killing drive. The Yellowjackets got the ball back with 6 minutes left and drove 67 yards to the MNU 5-yard line. On 4th down, Graceland found the end zone to get within 2, then converted the 2-point conversion to send the game to overtime.

MNU missed a field goal with their try, and Graceland fired a 25-yard touchdown pass to win the game on their first play.

"Graceland did a good job of finding a way to win," said head coach Brian Willmer. "We had too many costly mistakes and penalties. And we just failed tp close out the game on offense and defense."

Trent Hedlund threw for 204 yards and a touchdown. Javon Taylor rushed 16 times for 85 yards and a touchdown. Wesley Foryoh and Bo Miller caught 3 passes apiece. Drake Dofi caught a 61-yard touchdown. Matt Rashad recorded a game-high 10 tackles. James Guerrero and Dominic Swillum had 9 tackles each. And Tanner Hamilton had 6 tackles, a forced fumble, and 2 interceptions.

MNU falls to 1-2. The next game is at home on Saturday vs. Benedictine (2-1) at 11:00 AM.
