Pioneers Win in Double OT Again

The MNU Men's Soccer team left it late for the second game in a row. And for the second game in a row they scored the game winner in the 2nd overtime period. The opponent this time was Columbia College. It is the first time the two schools have met in the regular season and MNU gets the bragging rights with a 2-1 win.

The game started off poorly for MNU. Columbia's high pressure was giving the Pioneers fits and the Cougars had several chances to take the lead.  In the 11th minute they did just that. Columbia's Vadim Cojocov hit a ball that appeared to be a cross. It somehow found its way over the top of MNU goalkeeper Juan Pablo Riesco and into the net. Down 1-0, MNU began to control the tempo of the game and they began to create chances of their own. The equalizer came in the 34th minute. Luis Cadena headed a ball that had been redirected by Clark Campbell. His effort from close range was enough to beat the keeper. The teams went into the half tied 1-1.

The second half was a story of MNU controlling possession and Columbia using counter attacks to create opportunities. Each team was unsuccessful at finishing their opportunities and regulation ended with the game tied. In the 1st overtime period, MNU had two very good chances to take the game but they were unsuccessful. The Cougars had a good chance of their own snuffed out by MNU's Johannes Keisers. In the 105th minute, MNU got the goal they needed. Lucas Machado took a ball on the wing and beat his man as he dribbled into the box. He unleashed a great strike that found the back of the net for the golden goal.

For the game, MNU outshot Columbia 23-11, with SOG being 8-4. Columbia's goalkeeper was credited with 6 saves. Riesco, for MNU, had 3 saves. Columbia falls to 1-1 on the season. MNU is now 3-1. Next up for the Pioneers is a trip to the Southwest as they travel to Prescott, Arizona. The next home game is not until September 19. Keep up the Pioneers through the various social media outlets.
