Pioneers Power Past Ravens

A trio of 5-run innings resulted in a mercy rule 15-5 victory over Benedictine in the first round of the HAAC tournament on Thursday. Raven starter Austin Harrison had shut down the Pioneers in 2 career starts, but MNU finally solved the righthander with 5 runs in the bottom of the second. Nelson Santiago's 1-out double got the inning going, and Brandon Marrero tied the game with a 2-out single. Clayton Brandt gave MNU the lead with a 2-run homer to left, and 2 batters later Carlos Vargas knocked in 2 more with a double. In the bottom of the fourth, another big 2-out rally blew the game open. With 2 outs and 2 on Vargas doubled again to score 2, Seth Lieser followed with an RBI double, and back-to-back RBI singles from Santiago Romero and Nelson Santiago put MNU up 10-2. Benedictine scored 2 in the fifth and 1 in the seventh, but the Pioneers put up 5 more in the bottom of the seventh. With 2 outs, 4 runs in, and nobody on, Seth Lieser singled to extend the inning. Santiago Romero followed with an RBI double, and the 10-run mercy rule ended the game.

Phillipe Graham grinded out 6 and 2/3 innings and struck out 6 for his 7th victory. Brett Ebers struck out the only batter he faced. And Clayton Brandt (3-4, 3 R, HR, 2 RBI, BB, 2 SB), Trent Sullivan (2-3, 3 R, RBI, BB, HBP, 2 SB), Jordan Eckley (1-3, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI, 2 HBP, 2 SB), Carlos Vargas (2-4, R, 2 2B, 4 RBI, BB), Seth Lieser (2-5, 2 R, 2B, RBI), Santiago Romero (2-4, R, 2B, 2 RBI), Nelson Santiago (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), and Brandon Marrero (1-3, RBI, Sac) pounded out 15 run on 15 hits and 8 stolen bases.
