Pioneers Dominate Vikings

MNU advanced in the winners bracket with a 16-2 victory over Missouri Valley on Friday. The game was decided early as the Pioneers jumped on the Vikings with 2 run after the first two hitters. Clayton Brandt led off with a double and Trent Sullivan followed with a triple. Valley botched the relay and Sullivan advanced to the plate on the error. In the top of the second, MNU put the game away. Nelson Santiago led off with a single, and Kelvin Perez doubled him to third. A Blake Robberson sacrifice fly made it 3-0, and Brandon Marrero and Clayton Brandt got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Trent Sullivan drove in 2 more with a double. Jordan Eckley was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Carlos Vargas drove home 2 with a single. Nelson Santiago capped the scoring with a 2-run single, and MNU led 9-0. The Pioneers scored 1 in the fourth, 3 in the fifth, and single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth to match their season high with 16 runs (the 6th time they've reached that number). Valley recorded single runs in the fifth and eighth, and MNU won by 14. Santiago Romero pitched into the eighth and struck out 7 for his 6th victory. Jesus Brito struck out 2 in an inning and a third to close it out. And Trent Sullivan (3-5, 3 R, 2B, 3B, 3 RBI, BB, SB), Jordan Eckley (2-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, HBP, SF), Carlos Vargas (2-4, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB), and Nelson Santiago (2-5, R, 2 RBI, BB) had multi-hit games.

MNU is 32-19. The next game is Saturday vs. 1-seed Peru State at 4:00 in Joplin. The winner advances to the title round. PSC swept a 4-game series from MNU in March.
