Pioneers Take 3 of 4 at Benedictine

The Pioneers went to Benedictine and swept a double header from the Ravens 7-4 & 6-3 on Friday, then split 2 games on Saturday 1-2 & 6-5.

In the top of the first in Game 1, Trent Sullivan was hit by a pitch, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on an error. Seth Lieser's 2-out RBI gave MNU a 2-0 lead. In the top of the third, Clayton Brandt drilled a solo homer and Sullivan followed with a triple. Jordan Eckley singled home Sullivan, and 2 outs later Nelson Santiago's RBI double completed the team cycle. Five runs scored in the third, and the Pioneers led 7-0. Benedictine scored twice in the sixth and seventh innings, but the Pioneers held on for the 7-4 win. Brett Ebers earned his 4th victory of the season, and Brandt (1-4, R, HR, RBI), Sullivan (1-2, 2 R, 3B, BB, HBP, 2 SB), Eckley (2-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, 2 SB), Santiago (2-4, R, 2B, RBI), and Blake Robberson (2-3, RBI, BB, SB) led the offense.

In Game 2, Blake Robberson's squeeze bunt turned into an RBI single to start the scoring, but the Ravens tied the game in the third with a 2-out rally. In the top of the fourth, the Pioneers loaded the bases with no outs. Robberson singled home 1, and Clayton Brandt's deep sacrifice fly brought in another. In the top of the fifth, Nelson Santiago and Robberson recorded back-to-back RBI doubles to extend the lead to 6-1. Benedictine picked up 2 runs on a bases loaded error in the sixth, but Santiago Romero allowed no more and MNU won 6-3. Romero allowed just 5 hits in a complete game victory, and Nelson Santiago (3-3, R, 2B, 2 RBI) and Blake Robberson (3-3, 2B, 3 RBI) went 6-6.

In Game 3, neither team could get anything going as the starting pitchers dominated. In the bottom of the sixth of a scoreless game, Benedictine took advantage of 3 Pioneer errors to take a 1-0 lead, but the Ravens returned the favor in the top of the seventh. Back-to-back errors put a runner on 3rd with no outs, and Carlos Vargas tied the game with a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the eighth, an infield hit and an error put a runner on 2nd with no outs. After a bunt, a single through the drawn in infield gave the Ravens a 2-1 victory. Carlos Vargas struck out 10 and allowed just 4 hits in a complete game loss, and Clayton Brandt (1-2, BB) and Nelson Santiago (1-3) had MNU's 2 hits.

In Game 4, the Pioneers jumped on the Ravens in the first inning thanks to a record-breaking play. Clayton Brandt singled, moved to second on a bunt, and stole third - his MNU-record 72nd steal of his career (breaking Donnie MacLeod's ('09-'12) 71) - and Carlos Vargas knocked him home with an RBI groundout. Nelson Santiago doubled home another run, and MNU led 2-0. In the top of the fourth, Trent Sullivan knocked in a run with an RBI groundout, but the Ravens answered with 2 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the inning to get within 1. MNU went back up by 2 with a run in the sixth, but Benedictine tied the game with a 2-run homer in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the seventh, Carlos Vargas and Kelvin Perez singled to put runners on with 1 out. Santiago Romero singled to get the lead back for MNU, and Jordan Jones extended the lead with another single. In the bottom of the seventh, Benedictine pushed across an unearned run, but Phillipe Graham struck out 2 to earn the save. Zach Stinnett got the win in relief. And Clayton Brandt (1-2, R, 3 BB, 2 SB), Trent Sullivan (1-4, 2 RBI, Sac), Nelson Santiago (3-4, 2B, RBI), and Santiago Romero (3-4, 2B, RBI) led the offense.

MNU finishes the regular season 30-19 (16-10 HAAC). The next game is Thursday in the first round of the HAAC Post Season Tournament in Joplin, Missouri. 3-seed MNU will face 6-seed Benedictine at 4:00.
